How to Clean Canon Printer Heads – Easy to Follow Steps

It is a common thing for your Canon inkjet printer to produce uneven printing after a while of use. A major reason is due to clogged dried ink in your printer head.  

We know how frustrating such erratic printing can be. Therefore, this article is written to show you how to clean canon printer heads.

Cleaning Your Canon Printer Heads

There are two major methods of cleaning your printer heads. You can use the deep cleaning method or the manual method.

With the first method, you’ll have to clean the print heads using your computer. The second method requires you to clean the print heads manually.

Don’t worry; we’ll discuss both methods as simple as we can for clear understanding.

Cleaning Using Computer

Step 1: Click on the windows logo

On the taskbar on your computer, click the Windows logo to open the start menu.

Step 2: Click on “Devices and Printers”

On the right column of the start menu, click on Devices and Printers. This will open a new window.

Step 3: Select your printer

You’ll find a list of printers that have been added to your computer. Among these printers select your printer by right-clicking on it.

We are assuming you have already added your printer to your computer. If you have not added it, quickly read this article to learn how.

Step 4: Click on “Properties”

After right-clicking your printer, click on the properties option.

Step 5: Click on Maintenance

Step 6: Click Deep Cleaning

Once you click this, your Canon printer will start making some noise. This is like what it makes when printing.

This will continue until you see an on-screen message that shows us that the cleaning is complete.

Step 7: Run a test print

To confirm if your printer head is properly cleaned, run a test print. If properly cleaned, your printer should be printing quality fine prints.

Manual Cleaning

Step 1: Take out Ink Cartridges

After you’ve disconnected your Canon printer from the power source, open up the cover.

You should learn how to do that by consulting your printer’s manual. You can easily download it from the Canon website if you don’t have it.

Once you’ve opened the cover, carefully take out the ink cartridges.

Step 2: Take out the printer heads.

The next thing is to take out the printer heads. It usually snaps out when removed; so don’t get worried thinking you broke it.

Step 3: Soak the print head in a cleaning solution.

Now there are various ways to go about this but we recommend doing it this way:

You will need a printer head cleaning solution. Examples of such are the Inkjet Printers Printhead Cleaner, Magic Bullet Print Head Cleaner and Unblocker Kit, or the Printhead Hospital Inkjet Printer Head.

You can also make use of a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water for this step.

Pour this mixture into a shallow bowl and soak the print heads directly into it. Leave it soaked for about a while.

The duration of how long depends on how clogged it is. It could be for 20 minutes for light clogging. 1 to 2 hours for heavy clogging. And even overnight for serious clogging.

While soaked, shake the printer heads from time to time.

Step 4: Clean the printer heads toothbrush or damp towel

After the clogged ink is removed, pick a soft toothbrush or a towel. You’ll use it to clean the ink ports and the base with it.

Step 5: Rinse the printer heads with water

Place the print head under a running tap and rinse it with water.

Do not allow the water pressure to be too much while doing this.

Step 6: Dry the print heads

After rinsing, take a dry paper towel and dry the print heads of water.

Step 7: Put back the printer heads into the printer

Step 8: Run a test print.

To confirm if your printer head is properly cleaned, run a test print. If properly cleaned, your printer should be printing quality fine prints.  

If it is still not printing well, then you need to get a new printer heads.
